KU’s bowl possibilities take another blow

Troy's victory eliminates Jayhawks from at-large consideration; affiliated bowls select today

Kansas University’s football team is about finished with its bowl chances.

Following Saturday’s college football action, the Jayhawks no longer are eligible for an at-large bowl bid and are not expected to get a Big 12 Conference-affiliated bowl invitation, which will be passed out today.

From an at-large standpoint, the Jayhawks needed both Troy and Louisiana-Lafayette to lose Saturday to have any chance at getting the last at-large berth remaining, to the Motor City Bowl. That’s because a win by either Sun Belt school would move its record to 7-5 – and force the Detroit bowl, by rule, to pick a 7-5 Sun Belt team over 6-6 Kansas.

Louisiana-Lafayette helped KU’s cause, getting crushed by rival Louisiana-Monroe, 39-20, Saturday afternoon. But later Saturday evening, Troy eliminated Kansas from at-large contention, beating Florida International, 26-13, and winning the Sun Belt Conference championship.

In all likelihood, Troy (7-5) will go to the New Orleans Bowl while another Sun Belt team, 7-5 Middle Tennessee State, heads to the Motor City Bowl to play Central Michigan.

The other at-large bid, for the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego, was given to 7-5 Northern Illinois earlier this week.

That leaves KU with only one option for a bowl game – to get picked ahead of Oklahoma State and land an invitation to a Big 12-affiliated bowl.

Though both KU and OSU are 6-6, the Cowboys are expected to get the nod over the Jayhawks, perhaps being invited to the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La. That would leave the Jayhawks home for the holidays watching everybody else play.
