Suspect pleads not guilty in teen’s death

? A judge on Wednesday entered a not guilty plea for a man accused of having a pregnant Wichita teen killed because her family wanted to pursue statutory rape charges against him.

Elgin “Ray-Ray” Robinson, 20, is charged with capital murder in the June death of Chelsea Brooks. He also is charged with aggravated kidnapping, two counts of rape, aggravated indecent liberties and violation of a protective order.

Robinson is accused of paying $500 to have the 14-year-old killed. Chelsea was nine months pregnant at the time of her death, and Robinson said DNA tests confirmed a few months ago that he was the father of her baby.

Theodore Burnett, 49, a co-defendant, also pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Sedgwick County District Court.

A third suspect, Everett Gentry, already has pleaded guilty to capital murder as a juvenile and testified during the preliminary hearing for Robinson and Burnett.

Gentry said that he picked Chelsea up from a skating rink June 9 and that Burnett strangled her. He said Robinson wanted Chelsea killed because the family wanted to prosecute Robinson for statutory rape.

Chelsea’s body was found about a week later in a shallow grave in neighboring Butler County.

Sedgwick County District Attorney Nola Foulston on Wednesday filed a notice of intent to seek a separate sentencing if Robinson and Burnett are found guilty.

That notice is required if prosecutors decide to seek the death penalty.
