Pilot dies in crash of experimental glider

The pilot of an experimental aircraft was killed Friday afternoon when the plane crashed shortly after takeoff.

Police Capt. Darrell Haynes said the powered glider had just taken off from Jabara Airport and wasn’t far off the ground when the pilot attempted to bank to the east. The aircraft pitched nose down, breaking apart on impact.

The white plane’s wreckage could be seen about 100 yards from the end of the runway.

Haynes said the pilot, whose name hasn’t been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities closed the airport shortly after the accident. Haynes said the wreckage would remain on the runway through at least today as investigators look into the crash.

The accident came on the first day of the Wichita Flight Festival, a three-day event that celebrates the city’s aviation roots.

It was unknown whether organizers would have to reschedule events today and Sunday at Jabara.
