Topekan withdraws rezoning request

? A rezoning request that stirred controversy because it would have cleared the way for a new business in a neighborhood here has been withdrawn.

Topekan Tom Goodrich dropped his request to have part of the property he owns at East Fifth Street and Eisenhower Memorial Drive rezoned to commercial type 2. Goodrich is trying to sell the land where his mother lived until she died late last year.

Goodrich’s real estate agent, Tex Harrell, had been trying to get the city to approve the rezoning because he thought that would make the property more attractive to potential buyers.

Harrell said he met with the Lecompton City Council last week and decided regulations for setting a building back from a road would not leave room for a building.

Neighbors were concerned about what type of business might locate in the area and had signed a petition against the rezoning.
