A 51-year-old Lawrence man died Friday afternoon after an accident south of Clinton Lake involving his motorized bicycle and a minivan.

Lt. Kari Wempe, spokeswoman for the Douglas County Sheriff’s office, said officers were still trying to notify the man’s family Friday night.

After 4 p.m., the man was traveling to the west in front of a minivan with Osage County tags. He then turned to head north onto East 700 Road when he apparently made a U-turn and was struck by the van, Wempe said.

“He must have not observed that another vehicle was behind him,” she said.

Emergency responders pronounced the man dead at the scene. The driver and passengers in the van were not injured, Wempe said.
