LHS tennis salvages tie with SM East, 6-6

The Lawrence High girls tennis team won three of four doubles matches to salvage a 6-6 tie with powerful Shawnee Mission East on Tuesday at the Lawrence Tennis Center.

Lauren Kelly and Becca Dirks each picked up two points for the Lions.

Kelly won at No. 3 singles and also teamed with Laura Wilson for the victory at No. 1 doubles.

Dirks won at No. 7 singles and paired with Kelly Morgan to win at No. 4 doubles.

“The bad news is we lost four really close matches, either 6-8 or in tiebreaks,” said LHS coach Dick Wedel. “The good news is we won three other close matches.

“We should get some confidence, even from the losses. First you have to get close, then you have to learn how to win the close ones.”

LHS will travel Thursday to Manhattan.
