How they scored

First Quarter

:32 – Clark Green 4 run. Kansas needed just six plays to move 90 yards late in the first quarter. The big play was a play-action in a two-tight-end set, where quarterback Brian Luke found Brian Murph for a 59-yard gain down the middle of the field. A personal-foul penalty on ASU prolonged the drive again, and Green rushed in up the middle for six on second down. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 7, Appalachian State 0).

Second Quarter

10:14 – Jon Cornish 9 run. Kansas chugged its way downfield a bit slower this time, covering 58 yards in 10 plays. Most of it was done through the air with Luke’s arm, but Jon Cornish had three carries for 24 yards, the last up the middle and into the end zone as he was being hit. Webb kick missed wide right. (KU 13, ASU 0).

Third Quarter

7:49 – Brian Luke 1 run. A huge drive spanning 7:11 culminated with KU going for it on fourth down from the one-yard line. The long play was a shovel pass from Luke to Clark Green that went 15 yards, but otherwise, it was a workmanlike 14-play drive. Luke scampered in on an option to score six. Webb kick. (KU 20, ASU 0).

2:40 – Jon Cornish 1 run. An interesting drive which saw two quarterbacks – Marcus Herford and Brian Luke – ended with a one-yard dive by Cornish. KU started from the ASU 31 after a nice punt return by Charles Gordon, then had 18 yards rushing by Herford before Luke finished the drive. Luke pass to Russell Brorsen incomplete (KU 26, ASU 0).

Fourth Quarter

14:57 – Daniel Bettis 6 pass from Richie Williams. The Mountaineers had two 16-yard plays to move swiftly downfield, and a pass-interference penalty on Gordon put ASU within striking distance. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Williams found Bettis in the end zone. Bettis pass from Williams for the two-point conversion. (KU 26, ASU 8).

14:07 – Jon Cornish 5 run. It was all Cornish in a four-play, 75-yard drive. The junior showed impressive quickness on the drive, and it led to a 58-yard gain on one play, falling out of bounds at the five-yard line. He finished the job on the next play. Webb kick. (KU 33, ASU 8).

9:15 – Webb 34 field goal. Herford took the reins at quarterback again, using his legs and feet to advance KU into field-goal territory. The drive stalled, though, and Webb booted a field goal to put the Jayhawks up 28. (KU 36, ASU 8).
