Lawrence High tennis coach Dick Wedel isn’t overly concerned with the scores of his players’ matches this time of year.

He’s more intent on seeing what each Lion can do and deciding where each will fit into his lineup.

“We’re still exploring what are lineup is going to be,” Wedel said after the Lions lost to Shawnee Mission South and Olathe South by 3-1 scores Wednesday at the Lawrence Tennis Center. “I was pleased today, because we did things well that we have been working on in practice.”

The only victories on the day came from the No. 2 doubles team of Kylie Fritzel and Meredith Bush, who beat both schools by the same score: 8-6.

No. 1 singles player, senior Emily Thompson, dropped her opening match, 8-2, to freshman Mary Weatherholt of Shawnee Mission South, who earlier fell to Olathe South’s No. 1 player, Haley Craig. Thompson then lost to Olathe South’s Julie Coleman, 8-2.

No. 2 singles player Kelly Morgan lost to SM South’s Jordan White, 8-3, and 8-0 to Jen Ackerly of Olathe South, but Wedel has been pleased with her progress.

“She took private lessons over the summer, and she has improved a lot,” said Wedel. “She is like a sponge. When you tell her something, she listens and understands what you’re saying and does her best to try and do what you are showing her.”

During Wednesday’s matches, Wedel looked for specific things his team had worked on in practice.

“We have been working on approach shots and getting to the net on the short ball,” said Wedel. “Kelly and some of the girls did it a lot better today, but it’s pretty obvious that they aren’t comfortable with it yet. It’s kind of a new thing, so we have to keep working on it. Under the pressure of a game, you go with what you’re comfortable with, so we just need a lot of repetition.”
