Police issue warning after KU student robbed

Student's purse stolen as she walked to dorm

KU police have issued a warning to students after an 18-year-old female student was robbed walking to her dorm late Tuesday night.

Lawrence police Sgt. Dan Ward said today the woman was walking from the parking lot at Memorial Stadium toward Corbin Hall around 11 p.m. Tuesday when a man came up from behind her, grabbed her purse off her shoulder and fled south on foot.

The womman was not injured, but police said the man who robbed her got away with more than $600 in property.

Police described the man as being black, about 5-foot-9 and weighing 160 pounds. Witnesses said the man had shaved or short hair and was wearing a red or orange shirt and white shorts at the time of the robbery.

KU Police offer these safety tips in the wake of the robbery:

— Do not walk alone at night

— Be aware of people around you

— Report suspicious activity to police

— If you are being followed, go to a populated area and get help
