Seniors lead LHS sweep

It was a fitting end for the four seniors on this year’s Lawrence High volleyball team.

Playing in the last home match of their careers, they led the Lions to a 3-0 sweep in Tuesday’s quadrangular at LHS.

“This was the best we have played all season,” LHS coach Molly LaMere said following the Senior Night festivities. “We have been struggling a lot lately, but this was just a great team win. The seniors had a great night, every single one of them.”

Those seniors – Lindsey Lawrence, Kayla Nolte, Kirsten Stack and Sydney Wilson – all contributed to the sweep. Lawrence led the way with 18 kills on the night. Nolte had 11 kills, Wilson added seven, and Stack came off the bench to add two, including the final point of the night.

It was a night none of them will forget.

“I have played with Kayla all three years and the others for two, and it’s been great,” Lawrence said. “We’re all really close, and we hang out outside of school. I’m glad we all made it this far and we’re able to finish together.”

In their first match of the evening, the Lions defeated Leavenworth Immaculata in two games. In the first, the score was tied at 16 before junior Sydnei Tolefree served an 8-0 run to give the Lions a 24-16 lead. Immaculata tried to make it a game by going on a small 4-0 run, but Lawrence added a point for the 25-20 victory.

Lawrence High's Sydney Wilson, left, and Sydnei Tolefree try to block a kill by Leavenworth Immaculata's Lauren Ford. The Lions hosted a quadrangular Tuesday night at LHS.

In Game Two, the Lions dominated from the start, winning, 25-9. In the two-game sweep, Lawrence had a team-high eight kills, and junior Amanda Weishaar had seven.

The Lions next beat Topeka West in similar fashion, winning a close Game One before dominating Game Two. In Game One, they trailed 5-2 before Wilson served a 4-0 run to give the Lions a 6-5 lead. Moments later, Weishaar served a six-point run of her own to extend the LHS lead to 12-6.

The teams traded several points before Weishaar continued her strong serving with a 5-0 run that finished the game, giving the Lions a 25-17 victory.

Game Two wasn’t in doubt from the opening serve. Senior Kayla Nolte served a 7-0 run to start the game, and the Lions rolled from there. After another string of strong serves from Weishaar, Nolte finished the game with a 7-0 run to give the Lions an even bigger 25-6 victory.

“In the first games, we try to see what the other team is going to do,” LaMere said. “We used the momentum we got at the end of the first games to propel us in the second games. Also, the fact that it was Senior Night raised their intensity.”

The Lions’ third match was their toughest of the night, as they played an Emporia team that also was 2-0 in its opening two matches. Lawrence defeated Emporia, 25-21, in a hard-fought Game One, and won Game Two, 25-16.

Next for LHS (13-23) will be the Class 6A sub-state playoffs at 3 p.m. Saturday at Olathe South.
