Haverkamp leaves KU football program

Offensive lineman Scott Haverkamp, one of the state’s most sought-after recruits in 2004, has left the Kansas University football program and plans to transfer to Butler County Community College during the semester break.

Haverkamp confirmed he’s no longer on the team when reached by cell phone Tuesday.

“Things just didn’t work out for both of us,” Haverkamp told the Journal-World.

After redshirting in 2004, Haverkamp emerged on the depth chart over the summer at left tackle behind Cesar Rodriguez. He never could consistently pick up playing time, though, as KU stuck with the stable line of Rodriguez, Bob Whitaker, David Ochoa, Ryan Cantrell and Matt Thompson by midseason.

Haverkamp committed to KU before his senior season at Silver Lake High after receiving interest from Arizona State, Missouri and Kansas State. He was a Class 3A All-State lineman and played in the 2004 Shrine Bowl.

The 6-foot-4, 285-pound Haverkamp plans to play one season at Butler County before weighing his options.

“I don’t know,” Haverkamp said of his future. “I’ll be opening up my recruitment again.”

KU coach Mark Mangino wouldn’t confirm the departure, saying through a spokesperson that no personnel issues will be discussed until after the Jayhawks’ upcoming bowl game.
