Man sentenced to nearly 13 years in stabbing case

A judge sentenced a 36-year-old Lawrence man to nearly 13 years in prison today for a stabbing attack on his ex-girlfriend at her apartment on Aug. 2.

Rojelio Barron pleaded no contest to attempted first-degree murder charges on Sept. 30 in connection with the stabbing at the Colony Woods Apartment Complex, 1301 W. 24th St.

The victim had 30 stab wounds to her neck and head. She survived but experiences lasting effects from the attack.

At the hearing today, Barron’s attorney, Jim Rumsey said his client had no recollection of the attack and had been using cocaine and drinking before the attack. The victim was not in the courtroom for Barron’s sentencing.
