Lions win 3rd straight

The rest of the Sunflower League may prefer not to look, but the Lawrence High baseball team is starting to get on a roll.

After defeating Shawnee Mission Northwest, 6-2, Thursday at Ice Field for their third consecutive victory, the Lions improved to 8-10.

“I told our coaching staff I’m not concerned with our record,” LHS coach Brad Stoll said. “I’m concerned with being dangerous in May. That’s our focus.”

After starting the month off with a 5-4 victory against Shawnee Mission West, the Lions still could be a postseason threat.

Two weeks ago, Lawrence put on a River City Festival flop, losing all three games in the tournament as part of a four-game skid in which the only things the Lions could do consistently were boot balls around and make errant throws.

This is the same team. Isn’t it?

“We’re more confident,” LHS junior Brian Heere said. “We got a few wins under our belt, and we’re just going off of that.”

Heere exuded that confidence Thursday with a 2-for-4 day with two runs and a few did-you-see-that-catch highlights in center field.

Both of Heere’s hits led off innings. The Lions had a total of four leadoff hits on the afternoon.

Lawrence High infielder Marc Albers throws to first base for an out against Shawnee Mission Northwest. At right is infielder Nick Madl. The Lions won, 6-2, Thursday at Ice Field.

“Our whole offensive philosophy is to be aggressive early,” Stoll said. “If they’re going to give us something to hit, we have to hit it hard and in play. We did that tonight.”

The Lions had 12 hits, all singles. Some of the singles were lined into the outfield and others looked like they were hit with a sand wedge, but they all did the trick.

“We’re just trying to get on base, trying to start rallies,” catcher Brett Sims said. “It works.”

Heere gave LHS an early 1-0 edge in the first inning after Sims drove him home with a single.

The Lions added a run in the third inning when Matt Falk scored on a sacrifice fly from Tyler Knight.

LHS put it away in the fifth inning. Every batter in the LHS lineup stepped up to the plate in the inning except Heere. When the inning was over, the Lions had three runs off five singles to take a 5-2 lead into the top of the sixth inning.

Heere picked up his final run in the sixth inning, darting home after a fielder’s choice ground ball by Falk with one out.

Will Falk picked the victory for LHS after allowing two runs and five hits. His only noticeable blemish was a solo home run by Drew Madison in the fourth inning.

David Freeman earned a save after holding the Cougars (10-8) hitless in the sixth and seventh innings.

What may have tickled the Lions the most was the final statistic on the standard line: no errors. In fact, neither club committed an error.

So is it safe to say the error bug is gone?

“I think that’s out of here now,” Sims said. “I think the game went by so fast, and we played so good, that everybody was clicking.”

Added Stoll: “They’ve really turned it around mentally. They expect to make plays now.”

Lawrence will visit Olathe East on Tuesday before closing out its regular season with city foe Free State on Thursday.
