LHS loses opener to Creighton Prep, 9-5

? Nick DeBiasse blasted a three-run home run in the first inning, but Lawrence High’s pitching and defense couldn’t make it stand in a 9-5 loss Saturday to Omaha Creighton Prep in the Lions’ season-opening game.

Marc Albers added two doubles for the Lions, who had eight hits but also three errors in LHS coach Brad Stoll’s debut as head coach.

“We had been inside for over a week, so it was good to get outside and get into the flow of the season,” Stoll said. “Our offense was definitely our high point. We had a lot of great approaches at the plate today, we just didn’t pitch very well.”

Darren Parker relieved starter Daniel Green (0-1) and struck out five in 32/3 innings of relief. The Lions tried to rally with two runs in the top of the seventh, but Creighton Prep closed the door.

Stoll said the three errors hurt.

“Errors just came at inopportune times,” he said. “You make an error, and usually something bad happens right after that, and that’s what happened.

“But there were a lot of positives to draw on.”

Lawrence High will travel for a 4:15 p.m. game Thursday at Leavenworth in the Lions’ Sunflower League opener.
