Lions’ Wells tapped for national hall of fame

Former Lawrence High volleyball coach Joan Wells has been selected to the Hall of Fame of the National High School Athletic Coaches Assn. She will be inducted June 29 in Orlando, Fla., during the KHSACA national convention.

When Wells started coaching volleyball at Lawrence High in 1971, the team didn’t have uniforms, and Wells didn’t have a coach’s salary. Yet LHS became the state’s premier volleyball program, winning 90 percent of its matches and 15 state titles in her 27 years of coaching.

Wells retired from coaching in 1997 and retired as an LHS physical-education teacher in 2003. She also is a member of the Kansas State High School Activities Assn. Hall of Fame.
