Basketball player’s grandmother dies

Evon Jackson, the grandmother of Kansas University sophomore basketball player Darnell Jackson, died Tuesday at the age of 62 in a Las Vegas hospital.

Evon Jackson was visiting family May 29 in Las Vegas when she and Jackson’s mother, Shawn, were in a car wreck involving another vehicle. Shawn Jackson remains hospitalized with broken bones and other injuries.

Evon Jackson suffered substantial injuries and never recovered complete consciousness in the intensive care unit of the Nevada hospital.

“We are all saddened by this, and all of our thoughts and prayers are with Darnell and his family,” KU coach Bill Self said. “Getting to know the Jackson family through recruiting, through Darnell being here and this past week while visiting them in Las Vegas, I know this is a remarkably strong family and is very close. I am sure when the arrangements are made and there is a specific timeline on when those arrangements will be, the family will speak at that time.”
