Overland Park ? The talk show circuit was abuzz with rumors Tuesday that J.R. Giddens had been booted off Kansas University’s basketball team.

Not so. The embattled junior-to-be still is a Jayhawk.

“His status right now is obviously he’s still a member of the Kansas basketball program,” KU coach Bill Self said Tuesday after winning the Bayer Advantage Skins Game.

“But he is not going to summer school and is hurt to the point he can’t participate in anything players are participating in. He is kind of isolated now for lack of a better term.”

Self told the Kansas City media what he already has told the Journal-World the past couple of days regarding the future of Giddens, involved in a fight outside the Moon Bar on May 19.

Self said he expects the police investigation to take up to three more weeks.

“Based on what I’ve been told they would like to end it but are not quite (at that point yet),” Self said.

Self feels he has compiled enough facts on the case to have a pretty clear idea what happened that night. He won’t divulge details.

“There’s been enough information that has come back through numerous people I feel we have a much better grasp of what happened as opposed to what we were thinking four or five days after the incident,” said Self, who said he was letting the police “do their job” and didn’t want to “give the impression of wanting an unfair advantage of what happened.

“The problem is we can’t comment on the case,” Self added, “which certainly leads people to speculating and having their own idea of what happened based on that kind of stuff, based on rumors. We have a pretty good feel of what had gone on. But that’s irrelevant almost. The whole thing is we used poor judgment to put us in that position regardless.”

As far as Giddens’ physical health …

He had surgery to repair a slashed artery in his calf and will be on crutches two or three more weeks. Giddens will go six weeks without bearing weight on the calf and could miss 2 1/2 months.

“He’s progressing well, but it’s early in the process,” Self said. “The injury he sustained is one he should recover from, but it’s not an exact science. It’s a unique injury that you don’t see often with athletes. It’s more common in an accident.”

¢ Scholarship update: Self said it was possible KU could bring in another player for next season. “Yes, there’s a chance. I wouldn’t say it is very likely,” he said. “We have had our antennas up (since Moulaye Niang’s giving up hoops), but don’t have a target.”

KU could have landed Chicago big man DeAndre Thomas in recruiting in April, but had no scholarships available at the time. He chose Missouri.

Self said Alex Galindo, who has finalized transfer plans to Florida International, will not do a switcheroo and return.

¢ Court date: Matt Kleinmann, who was cited at 9:58 p.m. April 16 for drinking underage at The Wheel, entered a not guilty plea at his May appearance in municipal court. His next court date is July 8 either for a trial setting, to enter a plea or receive diversion.

¢ USA hoops: C.J. Giles is the only Jayhawk involved in USA Basketball competition this summer. He has been invited to try out for USA Basketball’s under-21 world championship team and World University Games team. Tryouts are in late July.
