Man injured in off-road accident

A Lawrence man well-known for his family’s pumpkin patch east of Lawrence was injured late this morning in an off-road accident about two miles east of Lawrence near the Kansas River.

According to family members, Larry Schaake, who owns the Schaake Pumpkin Patch, was spraying pesticide before noon along his property east of Lawrence when his ATV flipped over and landed on his leg.

According to family members, Schaake’s daughter searched for him for several hours before finding him on the riverbed and called for help.

Authorities responded shortly before 3 p.m. to the site, which is north of the intersection of Douglas County Road 1500 and Noria Road.

Family members told 6News that they thought Schaake had a broken leg and was overheated after waiting so long.
