Hooper makes Detroit debut

Kevin Hooper became the fourth Lawrence High product to play in a major league baseball game Saturday night.

Hooper went 0-for-1. He grounded out to third in his big-league debut for the Detroit Tigers in a 5-4 loss to Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Hooper, 28, is a 1995 Lawrence High graduate who later played at Wichita State. The other Lawrence High products who played in the big leagues were Ralph Houk, Steve Jeltz and Lee Stevens.

Stevens, a 1986 LHS grad, played for several major-league teams before retiring in 2003. A first-round draft choice of the Los Angeles Angels in ’86, Stevens hit 144 home runs during 10 major-league seasons. He also played two years in Japan.

Jeltz, who graduated from Lawrence High in 1977, played in the major leagues for eight seasons, seven with Philadelphia. Jeltz, who also played for KU, was the Phillies’ starting shortstop from 1986-89. He retired after spending the 1990 season with the Kansas City Royals.

Houk, a 1938 LHS grad, was a reserve catcher for the New York Yankees from 1947-54, but gained more fame as a major-league manager. Houk managed the Yankees from 1961-1973, the Tigers from 1974-78 and the Boston Red Sox from 1981-84.

Hooper was in his seventh minor-league season when he was purchased by the Tigers from their AAA farm team in Toledo, Ohio, over the Fourth of July weekend.
