Volleyball coach Huntsinger resigns

Jo Huntsinger has resigned as Lawrence High’s volleyball coach, ending an association with the program that lasted more than 25 years.

The Lions were Class 6A state runners-up last fall in her seventh and final season as head coach.

“It’s a decision I’ve been thinking about for the last few years,” said Huntsinger, who played for LHS and later served 16 years as an assistant coach at her alma mater. “I have eight nieces and nephews I’d like to spend more time with.”

LHS will lose seven seniors from its 2004 squad, but Huntsinger said the program would be in good shape with assistant coaches Molly LaMere, John Moos and Melissa Stenfors expected to return.

“All three of them are high-quality people,” Huntsinger said. “I felt confident leaving at this time, knowing that they would be back. That will make the transition smoother. I think it’s a good time for me to step aside.”

Huntsinger will continue to teach anatomy, physiology and lifetime sports at Lawrence High.

“We’re really happy for her — though we tried to talk her out of it because she’s been devoted to the kids and has done great things here,” LHS athletic director Ron Commons said.

LHS already has posted the job opening, and Commons expected to have plenty of applications.

“We hope our reputation and success over the years will make people want to come and add to it,” Commons said.
