West tops LHS girls

? Shawnee Mission West scored nine of its 11 fourth-quarter points from the free-throw line and held off a Lawrence High rally for a 41-33 high school girls basketball victory Thursday night.

The Lions (11-8) cut West’s lead to one point, 32-31, midway through the fourth period, but West hit its free throws down the stretch. Drew Huff scored 12 points, and Megan Klingler added 11 points to lead LHS.

“We had our chances,” LHS coach Kristin Mallory said. “It was a little disappointing for us, obviously. I felt we played good defense in the first half. We had open shot after open shot but couldn’t put them down.”

The Lions will open sub-state play Thursday at home.
