Power outage strikes KU campus

A power outage struck the Kansas University campus and a nearby neighborhood this morning, leaving most buildings east of Naismith in the dark and office machines, including computers, inoperable for about an hour and 10 minutes.

About 4,000 utility customers in the neighborhood between 9th and 19th streets and between West Campus and Schwarz also lost power, according to a Westar spokesperson. The power outage was restored about 10:50 a.m.

A Westar spokesperson said the outage was caused by a squirrel in the transformer at the 19th Street substation
