Murder charge filed in shooting incident

A 44-year-old Lawrence man has been charged with attempted first-degree murder.

Keith J. Mann was arrested Sunday morning by Lawrence Police after an investigation into a shooting incident at a south Lawrence apartment complex in the 1800 block of West 26th Street.

Police arrested Mann and Menford I. Jemison, 36, on Sunday after finding a man suffering a gunshot wound to the ear and a woman with a cut on her head.

Jemison was arrested for striking a woman with a glass bottle. He was charged Tuesday in court with aggravated battery and for possession of morphine.

Mann is accused of firing the gunshot that wounded the man.

“I’m sorry for the way stuff went,” Mann said during his first appearance in court on Tuesday from the Douglas County Jail. Mann said he made a mistake and told District Court Pro Tem Judge Peggy Kittel he wanted to go home.

Mann’s bond was set at $90,000. Jemison’s bond was set at $50,000.

Both men are scheduled to appear in court at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
