Lions win wild one

Three late technicals help LHS trip Olathe South

? The fourth-quarter frenzy was back. And it was wilder than ever.

Lawrence High’s boys basketball team, fresh off a 25-point fourth-quarter flurry that propelled it to a victory Friday over Olathe East, outdid itself Tuesday. Against Olathe South, the Lions scored 32 points in the final period, coming from behind to defeat the defending Class 6A state champions on the road, 66-59.

LHS (11-5) almost scored more points in the fourth quarter than it did in the first three combined. But the Lions’ grit was overshadowed by a bizarre ending to the Sunflower League battle, during which there were three technical fouls, two ejections and a string of six technical free throws shot by LHS senior Brennan Bechard.

With LHS up, 61-57, with 11.4 seconds left, Bechard was whistled for a foul just before O-South’s Clint McFall went up for a jump shot. The referee ruled the foul came before the shot, resulting in a one-and-one free-throw opportunity instead of a two-charity shooting foul.

That irked the Olathe South coaching staff, and a comment made near the bench — some thought a fan seated near the coaches was responsible — caused Falcons head coach John McFall to get called for a technical foul. The whistle angered McFall, who jawed with the officials until he was ejected with his second technical. Irritated by that, O-South assistant Brett McFall argued and picked up a technical, too.

After Clint McFall — John’s son and Brett’s brother — hit his two free throws, Bechard lined up to, oddly enough, shoot six. He hit five of them to seal the victory.

“John is a friend of mine, and I’m really disappointed it went down like that,” LHS coach Chris Davis said. “It was an intense ballgame and an intense moment. I’m glad for the win, just not the way it went down.”

LHS may have had the game in hand before the madness. After Lawrence had a 7-6 early lead, the Falcons gained control and led by as many as 12. But LHS inched closer and closer throughout the fourth quarter and finally cleared the hump with just 57 seconds left when David Freeman nailed his first three-pointer of the night to put the Lions up, 56-55.

Lawrence High's Kristian Pope (20) takes the ball in for a guarded layup. The Lions beat Olathe South, 66-59, Tuesday in Olathe.

Freeman then hit two free throws with 47 seconds left to put LHS up three. A Larry Barber free throw made it a two-possession game, and Olathe South never had a chance to tie.

“Since I’ve been here, we haven’t beat them,” Freeman said of the Falcons. “They won state last year, they’re number two in the state right now. It feels good, but most likely we’re going to see them again (in sub-states), so it’s not something to get too pumped up about now.”

Lawrence High's David Freeman triggers at three-point range contributing to the Lions' win at Olathe South, 59-66.

Lawrence balanced its scoring attack Tuesday, having six players — Bechard, Freeman, Kristian Pope, Tony Anderson, Tyler Knight and Chance Riley — score at least eight points. Bechard led the Lions with 13, including seven free throws in the fourth quarter.

If anything, Lawrence’s last two victories are proof that late determination can take a team a long way. Davis just hopes it continues, starting Friday against Shawnee Mission East.

“Our whole goal was try to give ourselves a chance at the end,” Davis said. “Olathe South is such a good team, we were concerned about just being in the game. That we crawled back and took the lead is a testament. We’ve done that a few times and done well.”
