Snowy roadways leading to traffic accidents

As snow fell today throughout the city, Lawrence Police department reported business as usual: Slick streets, packed slush and a handful of car accidents.

“It’s probably a good idea to stay home, if you can,” Mark Warren, a police spokesman, said.

From 6:45 this morning to early afternoon, 15 accidents were reported to law enforcement officers in Douglas County, with most of them in the Lawrence area.

Two cars rolled over after losing control on slick streets, officers said. The first happened on eastbound Kansas Highway 10, closing both lanes while crews removed the vehicle. Police said the driver was not seriously hurt.

The second car flipped while traveling on Bob Billings Road. Police did not have information about the condition of the driver.

Police said that the other wrecks were injury-free for the most part.

“The streets are slick, snow-packed,” Warren said. “People need to be careful out there.”
