LHS girls knock off SM Northwest

? Lawrence High’s girls basketball team knocked Shawnee Mission Northwest from the unbeaten ranks Thursday.

The Lions, who used a zone defense to confound the Cougars’ height advantage, erased a seven-point fourth-quarter deficit and prevailed, 53-50, in their Sunflower League opener.

Sydney Wilson scored 12 points, Drew Huff 11 and Danielle Bird 10 for the Lions, 2-4 overall and 1-0 in the Sunflower League. Northwest fell to 3-1, 0-1.

“Sydney Wilson hit a couple threes in the fourth quarter when they took the lead and we had some huge defensive rebounds,” LHS coach Kristin Mallory said. “They had three 6-footers. The nice thing is we rebounded well.”

Katelyn Hobbs, who lost a contact lens early in the game, hit a big layup late, the coach indicated.

“It’s the first game we had eight people score,” Mallory said. “We had people score in the post, chipping in four to six points apiece. It was big for the kids, a big confidence boost.”

LHS will play host to Free State next Thursday.
