Long-running program prepares for finale
After 32 years, Calder Pickett’s Kansas Public Radio show, “The American Past,” will air for the final time from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 25.
His last two programs, Dec. 18 and 25, will be retrospectives, including his favorite stories and episodes.
Replacing the program is the comedy show “Right Between the Ears.” The comedy troupe will be assembling hourlong shows combining new material with some of the best sketches in its 20-year archive. The first broadcast is set for 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Jan. 1.
Pickett has produced more than 1,500 hourlong episodes of “The American Past” since its debut in 1973. The program received the George Foster Peabody Award for “meritorious service to journalism.”
Pickett taught journalism at Kansas University from 1951 to 1988. His honors include the Chancellor’s Club Career Teaching Award and the H.O.P.E. teaching award.
