LHS girls dominant in first win

? Lawrence High’s girls basketball squad picked up its first victory of the season Saturday in convincing fashion.

The Lions (1-3) defeated Kansas City Wyandotte, 64-39, in a second-round game of the Shawnee Heights tournament.

“It feels good to get the first win,” LHS coach Kristin Mallory said. “We’ve played some tough teams. The girls did a good job of being ready to play.”

Drew Huff led the Lions with 20 points, Katelyn Hobbs added 13 points, and Jenica Wessels, Sydnei Tolefree and Danielle Bird scored eight apiece.

LHS raced to a 22-4 lead after one quarter and held a 37-16 advantage at halftime.

“We played a lot better defense to start the game,” Mallory said. “We executed our offense really well. We brought them out of their zone. We got a lead, and that allowed us to play a lot of kids. Jenica Wessels really stepped up today. We were really aggressive and caused a lot of turnovers.”

The Lions played without seniors Sydney Wilson and Sarah Johnson, who were taking their ACT tests Saturday.

Originally scheduled to play a second tournament game Saturday, the Lions instead will travel Monday to Overland Park Aquinas in the fifth-place matchup.
