Rush given KU student ID number

Signs still point to Brandon Rush becoming a member of Kansas University’s basketball team.

It was confirmed by KU officials Thursday that Rush, a 6-foot-6 freshman-to-be from Kansas City, Mo., had obtained a KU student ID number.

Sources say this means Rush has been accepted for admission to KU. Admittance clears the way for full enrollment if and when Rush is declared academically eligible by the NCAA Clearinghouse.

On Thursday, after discovering Rush had been granted a KUID, Sunflower Broadband Channel 6 reporter Brooke Wehner contacted officials at Rush’s two other finalists, Illinois and Indiana, to see if he had been accepted for admission.

An Indiana official had no record of Rush yet being accepted as a student. An Illinois official said that according to public records, Rush was not an Illini student. The individual would not look at U of I admission records, citing student privacy.

Rush said in a written statement Wednesday that he was committed to attending college. He said the NCAA Clearinghouse was awaiting an official 48-h form from Kansas City Career Academy High, a school that no longer is open.

If, as expected, significant progress was made on that matter Thursday, Rush’s situation could be resolved by today or early next week.

As far as Rush’s actually enrolling at KU more than a week after the start of classes, KU’s Web site explains late-enrollment procedure: A student can, in fact, petition for late enrollment until “the last day of class.”

Rush has appeared in Lawrence several times the past week and competed in pickup games. He’s yet to officially announce his college choice, though his grandmother has said she fully expected him to be a future Jayhawk. Rush, as he has been through most of his recruitment, was unavailable for comment Thursday.

¢ Storrs to visit again?: Lance Storrs, a 6-5 high school junior to be from Columbia High in Decatur, Ga., told rivals.com that he likely would attend Late Night in the Phog on Oct. 14. Storrs, who made an unofficial visit last summer to KU, also is considering Alabama, Georgia Tech and others.

¢ K.C. soph likes KU: Travis Releford, a 6-4 sophomore from Kansas City Central High, earlier this week drove to Lawrence to play in pickup games with the Jayhawks. Releford told scout.com he had been offered a scholarship by KU. He told the Web site his other favorites were Duke and North Carolina.
