KU’s Hawk Week activities begin Sunday

Kansas University today announced the schedule for Hawk Week, which runs Sunday through Aug. 20 and includes a flurry of academic and social activities for new and returning students.

The week officially begins with the opening Sunday of KU residence and scholarship halls. Classes begin Thursday.

Between Sunday and Aug. 20, more than 10,000 students will participate in Hawk Week activities. The activities include tips for achieving academic success, daily sessions on the libraries, sports venues, student employment, volunteer opportunities and how to find classes. At night, students are invited to the Student Alumni Assn.’s ice cream social, Traditions Night, free movies, concerts and arts festivals.

Sunday, Aug. 14

¢ Union Fest 9-12 p.m.; Kansas Union. The Union kicks off Hawk Week with games, give-aways and free food.

Monday, Aug. 15

¢ Ice Cream Social 6:30-8 p.m.; Adams Alumni Center, featuring free ice cream, give-aways, Jayhawk tattoos, games and tours of the Alumni Center.

¢ Traditions Night 8-9 p.m.; Memorial Stadium. New and returning students join faculty, staff, the KU Marching Band and other Lawrence community members in exploring KU’s traditions, past and present.

¢ Rock-A-Hawk 10 p.m.-1 a.m.; Visitor Center Parking Lot. KU’s Daisy Hill hosts a dance party with prizes, music, free food and Coke products for students.

Tuesday, Aug. 16

¢ Beach ‘N’ Boulevard featuring the Info Fair 7-10 p.m.; Wescoe Beach. Some 400 students organizations will be represented at the Info Fair. The Student Union Activities is featuring live music, sand volleyball and other games with prizes.

¢ Hawk Link Block Party 10 p.m. -12:30 a.m.; Wescoe Beach. HAWK Link, a retention program focused on multicultural students sponsors a block party with music, dancing and entertainment.

Wednesday, Aug. 17

¢ Take Over the Beach 1 – 4 p.m.; Wescoe Beach. HAWK Link provides music, entertainment and free prizes and opportunities for new students to check out KU student organizations, the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the Multicultural Resource Center and other KU departments.

¢ Convocation, 8-9 pm; Lied Center. The academic year official begins with Convocation – the coming together of students, faculty and staff. The convocation band provides music and a video lends a tribute to KU. Chancellor Robert Hemenway, Student Body President Nick Sterner and others will speak.

Thursday, Aug. 18

¢ First day of classes

¢ Burge Bash 4-6 p.m.; Burge Union. A new event with live music, a DJ, free food and prizes to showcase the Burge Union services including the University Career Center, Legal Services for Students office and KU Bookstore. Features: Mechanical bull ride, a rock wall climb, and a money tunnel game.

¢ Downtown Hawks 5-8 p.m.; Downtown Lawrence. Downtown merchants welcome KU students. Featured businesses will provide student discounts for those bringing their KU ID card.

Friday, Aug. 19

¢ Lied Center Art Festival 6-7 p.m.; Lied Center Lawn. A festival in the Lied Center’s garden courtyard features cakes, balloons, face painting, clowns, prize giveaways and other activities and information about Lawrence area arts.

¢ Lied Center Concert 7-8 p.m.; Lied Center Lawn. The Sisters Morales — Lisa and Roberta — are accomplished musicians and songwriters. This free event kicks off the 2005 Lied Center season.

¢ Movie on the Hill 10 p.m.-12 a.m; West Campanile Hill. An open-air movie, “Ferri Bueller’s Day Off” free to the public.

Saturday, Aug. 20

¢ Community Service Project, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; 4th Floor Kansas Union. KU’s Center for Community Outreach provides buses to transport students to community organizations where they will spend the day on service projects and learning about volunteer opportunities in the community.

¢ Healthy Choices, KU Recreation Services, 2-6 p.m.; Student Recreation Center Students can explore the center and take an opportunity to climb the 42′ Climbing Wall, participate in a basketball skills competition and/or a volleyball tournament, learn about fitness programs (KU Fit, Personal Training and FIT4U), and see Sport Club and Fitness demonstrations.
