Juneau, Lions sweep ONW

? Lawrence High’s softball squad improved to 4-0 after a pair of victories Thursday over Olathe Northwest.

The Lions cruised in the first game, 10-1, then held on for a 5-3 victory in the nightcap.

Whitney Juneau earned the victory in both games, and the LHS offense sure backed her up in the opener. The Lions scored five first-inning runs and never seriously were threatened. Amy Bullerman tripled and had two RBIs, Rachel Amyx went 2-for-5 with an RBI, and Sam Hays tripled and had two RBIs.

The offensive surge was an obvious comfort for LHS coach Reenie Stogsdill.

“It was nice to come out and score five runs in the first inning,” she said. “That kind of set the tone.”

It also helped that O-Northwest committed six errors, allowing LHS to score 10 runs on just seven hits.

Juneau relieved in the second game and shut down O-Northwest as the Lions hammered out 11 hits. Amyx went 3-for-3 with an RBI; Drew Huff was 2-for-2 with an RBI, Hays and Bullerman each went 2-for-3 with an RBI apiece, and Shannon Worley was 2-for-3.

The Lions (4-0) will play host Tuesday to Shawnee Mission Northwest, a squad Stogsdill said was “always tough.”

“It’s nice to be 4-0, and we’ll have a big test next week,” she said.
