LHS softball earns sweep

The Lawrence High softball team opened the season in impressive fashion Tuesday in a doubleheader sweep of Shawnee Mission South.

In the first game, LHS pitcher Whitney Juneau gave up just one hit and struck out 13 batters in a 1-0 victory. Drew Huff drove in the game’s only run on an RBI triple.

Huff went 3-of-4 from the plate in the game, while Amy Bullerman helped with a 2-for-3 performance. Juneau also had a double.

The Lions had to sweat out the second game as well, but four South errors eventually pushed Lawrence to a 4-3 victory. Lisa Pearse got the win for LHS, giving up just five hits, while Lauren Kelly went 2-for-4.

“Whitney coming out and having 13 strikeouts was huge for us,” LHS coach Reenie Stogsdill said. “I didn’t think she’s at the top of her game yet, and that was nice to see. Defensively, we made some plays when we had to, and we looked pretty sharp.”

LHS will look to stay perfect Thursday when it travels to Olathe Northwest.
