Lions’ Wilson struggles, settles for third at state golf meet

? Things didn’t start well for Sydney Wilson on Monday at St. Andrews Golf Course.

Her finish was better.

Wilson, the Sunflower League and regional champion from Lawrence High, bogeyed the par-5 first hole and took a triple-bogey on No. 2 when her second shot on the par-4 hit the cart path and bounced out of bounds.

Wilson was 6-over on the front nine but rallied with birdies on Nos. 10 and 15. Her 1-over 36 on the back nine gave her a 77 and put her in a four-way tie for second in the Class 6-5A state meet.

“That shows the mental edge she has,” LHS coach Mike Lewis said. “At the state tournament, a lot of girls would have gone into a downward spiral. She got her composure and finished strong.”

Wilson’s 77 matched Salina South’s Jordan Nixon, Manhattan’s Emily Houtz and Newton’s Blair Koehn. The four-way playoff also gave her another chance at No. 2.

“I played it perfect in my practice rounds,” said Wilson, who had made par on the hole Friday and Sunday. “I wanted another shot at No. 2.”

Wilson actually had an opportunity to win the sudden-death playoff on the first hole.

“I had a chance to birdie No. 1, and I should have,” Wilson said. “I hit my first two shots too well to hit that bad of a third shot.”

Nixon, Wilson and Houtz all made par, while Koehn was forced to settle for fifth place after a bogey.

Wilson and her two remaining competitors returned to the No. 2, which has a hazard in front of the green and a cart path on the three other sides.

“I was going for the center of the green,” Wilson said.

Instead, she hit the path in almost the same spot — to the left of the green — and her ball shot off the hard surface and bounced away from the hole into the rough.

Wilson still managed to get on the green in three, but she missed a seven-foot putt for par.

“It was very makeable,” she said. “I made about four of those today.”

Nixon’s par gave her second place, while Wilson’s bogey gave her third. Houtz made quadruple-bogey and finished fourth.

“I’m really disappointed,” said Wilson, who won a playoff for second place at last year’s state meet at Auburn Hills in Wichita. “I have to be happy with third, but I know I’m capable of playing so much better than I did.”

Mallory Mahon of Overland Park Aquinas won individual honors with a 2-over 72. Mahon, Wilson and the other medalists will have to wait for their rewards. Athletic officials from Olathe East — the host school — said a box of medals either was lost, stolen or accidentally thrown away. New medals will have to be ordered.

There was no such problem with team trophies, which went to champion Manhattan (327), runner-up Aquinas (333) and third-place Washburn Rural.

Lawrence High did not qualify as a team, but two other Lions — junior Jamie Shmalberg (90) and senior Whitney Juneau (101) — qualified as individuals.

Wilson wasn’t too upset about her missing third-place medal. She was thinking ahead to basketball season.

“I’ll probably start training tomorrow,” she said.
