Governor reaches pact with tribes that could lead to KC casino

? Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ office and two American Indian tribes have apparently reached an agreement on a gaming compact that could lead to a large casino in Kansas City, Kan.

Sebelius’ office said on Friday it will make an announcement Monday.

Negotiations have been going on for most of the year between the state and the Kickapoo and Sac and Fox tribes to open a $210 million hotel and casino near the Kansas Speedway.

Existing tribal compacts on other casinos do not give the state a share of the profits. The two tribes have been willing to give the state a percentage of revenues in exchange for operating in the lucrative Kansas City-area market. Some estimates have said the state could gain $40 million to $80 million annually in revenue.

Sebelius’ office has scheduled news conferences for noon Monday at the Capitol and then 2:30 p.m. at the Kansas Speedway Travel Information Center in Kansas City, Kan.

Any compact would have to be approved by lawmakers and the U.S. secretary of interior.
