Ex-LHS football coach Freeman headed to shrine

Bill Freeman, who won five Class 6A state football titles while head coach at Lawrence High, has been named to the Kansas State High School Activities Assn. Hall of Fame.

Freeman’s Lions won 6A state titles in 1979, 1984, 1986, 1987 and 1989, his last season at LHS. He also won the Class 3A state championship while at Osawatomie in 1973.

Freeman also is credited with a mythical title at LeRoy High prior to the state playoff system. A native of LeRoy, Freeman retired there after leaving Lawrence High in 1990.

In his 33 years as a prep football coach, Freeman experienced only four sub-.500 seasons, posting 242 wins, 81 losses and 3 ties. In 16 years with the Lions, he compiled a 134-38 record.

Freeman, 72, is the second-winningest coach in Lawrence High history behind the legendary Al Woolard and ranks in the Top 10 in wins among state coaches.

His Lawrence High track teams also captured Class 6A state track and field titles in 1989 and 1990.

Also named to the KSHSAA shrine were John Albertson, an administrator from Basehor; Bruce Harper, an official from Pryor, Okla.; Blake Mulvaney, an administrator from Kansas City; and Rocky Felton, a coach from Abilene.

Freeman’s official induction will occur sometime during the second semester at a date and site to be determined.
