Student Union Activities organizes many events

Student Union Activities organizes several events for Kansas University students.

SUA works independently from Kansas University to provide entertainment including music, movies and guest speakers. It organizes events for Hawk Week, concerts at the Lied Center and guest speakers.

SUA will have six committees in 2004-2005:

  • Comedy and concerts: Organizes all the music events and performers.
  • Traditions: New committee that will organize homecoming events and parents’ weekend.
  • Social issues: Arranges for political and spiritual speakers to come to KU.
  • Games and novelties: Organizes poker and video game events.
  • Cultural arts: Organizes poetry slams, art galleries, etc.
  • Here are the 2004-2005 Student Union Activities officers:President: Rachel Peart, sophomore.Vice president: Jamie Labrier, junior.Director of public relations: Kaitlin Connealy, sophomore.Films coordinator: Nick Menefee, junior.Comedy and concerts: Wil Lamborn, junior.Traditions coordinator: Lauren Stewart, junior.Social issues coordinator: Megan Storm, sophomore.Games and novelty coordinator: Sean Hatfield, junior.Cultural arts coordinator: Megan Wesley, sophomore.
  • Films: Organizes films shown in the Kansas Ballroom as well as speakers from the film industry.

Elected SUA officers work all year to organize events for KU. Some of the earliest events occur during Hawk Week, which are a series of events for all new and returning KU students to enjoy before the fall semester.

Lauren Stewart, traditions coordinator, helped organize Unionfest on Aug. 15 at the Kansas Union. Other events include Beach on Boulevard on Aug. 17 at Wescoe Beach, where students can play sand volleyball, and Movie on the Hill on Aug. 20, when a movie will be shown on the Campanile Hill.

SUA has many regular events during the school year, including various essay or photo contests and poetry slams. Stewart said the poetry slams were events that started last year and have received a good amount of attention from students.

Rachel Peart, SUA president, said approximately 76,000 people checked out SUA’s events annually.
