Shankel named interim president of KU Alumni Association

The Kansas University Alumni Association has named an interim president to take over for Fred Williams, who was fired Saturday.

Del Shankel, a former biology professor, vice chancellor and interim chancellor, will take over the association immediately, said Linda Duston Warren, national chair of the association.

“Del Shankel is among the university’s most trusted and talented leaders,” Warren said. “The association is fortunate that he once again is willing to guide a KU entity through a pivotal transition.”

Williams said Thursday he had been told by Warren on Saturday that he was on administrative leave with pay. Warren said the board of directors had determined that “it was time for a change” but declined further comment, saying it was a personnel issue.

Warren also declined to say whether Williams would continue to be paid by the association under the terms of his contract.

Williams’ attorney did not immediately respond to a phone message seeking comment Friday. Williams had been president of the association since 1983.
