Football players landing in police reports

KU running back injured in downtown fight

For the third time in less than two weeks, a Kansas University football player has been involved in an incident that required police attention.

Austine Nwabuisi, 21, a junior KU running back last season, is listed as one of two victims in a Lawrence Police report about a fight Saturday night in the 100 block of West 11th Street in the downtown area.

Nwabuisi suffered facial injuries when he was hit with a beer bottle during the fight, according to a police report. Nwabuisi is identified on the police report as Kelichi Nwabuisi.

Another victim, Alvin Harris, 39, Harveyville, also was injured when he was struck in the face by a man, according to the report. He was taken by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Nwabuisi was not taken by ambulance to the hospital.

An investigation is continuing, and no arrests have been made, Sgt. Mike Pattrick, police spokesman, said Monday.

The incident took place about 11 p.m. when words were exchanged between Harris and people he was with and a group of men Nwabuisi was with, according to the report. That led to fisticuffs and thrown beer bottles, police said.

Harris told police that derogatory comments were made toward his daughter, who was with him, according to police.

The names of others at the scene who were witnesses or who might have been involved in the incident were not released by police.

Neither Harris nor Nwabuisi could be reached for comment.

KU head football coach Mark Mangino had little to say Monday about the incident or others involving current and former football players.

“I am in the process of gathering information on recent incidents involving our players,” Mangino said in a statement. “When I have all the facts, I’ll take appropriate action.”

Early Friday, running back John Randle was arrested after a fight in the 1000 block of Massachusetts Street. He is scheduled to appear March 17 in Municipal Court, but official charges had not been filed as of Monday.

Former KU running back Harold McClendon, a senior last season, was arrested by KU Public Safety officers Feb. 28 and has been charged in Douglas County District Court with criminal deprivation of property and domestic battery. A May 12 trial has been set.

McClendon also is charged with domestic battery and criminal damage to property for a Dec. 13, 2003, incident. A trial is set for April 6.
