KU office gets new name, director

Center for Campus Life now the Student Involvement and Leadership Center

After only a year under the name Center for Campus Life, the Kansas University office that advises student organizations is getting a new name and a new director.

KU officials say the office now will be called the Student Involvement and Leadership Center and will be under the leadership of Rueben Perez, a former coordinator of leadership programs who was promoted to assistant dean of students.

The office’s former director, Danny Kaiser, was promoted to assistant dean of students and will oversee the university’s student judicial system.

Kaiser said the name change better explained the office’s mission. Until last year, it was called the Student Organizations and Leadership Development Center.

“A year ago we couldn’t come up with the right name,” he said. “This better reflects the role of the office.”

Perez, who has worked for KU since 2000, has bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Emporia State University. He couldn’t be reached for comment last week.

Meanwhile, Kaiser said he hoped to centralize the department-level student judicial processes that occur across campus. He said one school often doesn’t know when another has punished a student for academic misconduct.

He also said the judicial process applied to nonacademic issues, as well.

“A student might get into an altercation in the fitness center and also get into an altercation at a residence hall,” Kaiser said. “This person probably has an anger problem. We’re not looking for ways to punish students here, we’re looking for ways to help them.”

Kaiser, who has worked at KU since 1986, also will be a member of the Student Success Emergency Response Team and will monitor local and national legislation related to student life.
