Tips to choosing a major

  • Take your general education courses seriously. Take courses in a variety of subjects to discover what areas motivate you and spark your enthusiasm.
  • Talk to advisers, faculty and friends in various majors.
  • Spend time reading the Undergraduate Catalog. Look at various majors’ requirements and course descriptions. As you go through the catalog, circle the course descriptions that sound most interesting to you.
  • Take a class in a field that interests you. Ask faculty or advisers for guidance on which courses offer the best exploration opportunities. Additionally, research the career options associated with the wide range of KU majors.
  • Visit the University Career and Employment Services Office, 110 Burge Union. Talk with a career counselor and check out resources on majors or occupations you find interesting.
  • Attend a meeting of a student or professional organization related to a field you are interested in; see how comfortable and interested you are in the subjects discussed and with the people involved.
  • Go online and check out Web sites that offer information on careers and majors.
