Students stay fit by participating in intramurals

Sweat rolled over Kathy Truong’s furrowed brow, stinging her eyes.

It was 6:23 a.m. and she was only halfway done. She was among hundreds running up the Campanile Hill on Kansas University’s campus.

Truong was one of many KU students who participated in Red Dog Days, a summer exercise program at Memorial Stadium.

“It was such a stress reliever. The momentum from doing Dog Days over the summer will roll over into my fall workouts,” said Truong, a Lawrence senior.

As the new semester begins, students will find ways to remain active and stay in shape and many of them turn to intramural programs.

KU recreation services has an intramural program with sports ranging from flag football to table tennis during the fall and spring semesters. Truong participated last fall in the intramural volleyball tournament at the Student Fitness Recreation Center.

Truong said she would try volleyball intramurals again this fall if she could organize a team. Until then, she said she would work out at the Student Rec Center.

“I try and mix it up a little,” she said. ” If I’m at the gym, I’ll start with a few laps on the track, do some abs and then lift some weights.”

Flag football is a popular intramural sport. Kurt Schooley, assistant director of sports programs, said he expected 120 teams to sign up this fall.

Schooley said the goal of the intramural program was to offer a broad range of sports to as many people as possible.

“We want to reach people who are competitive and those who want to have a good time,” Schooley said. “We want to maximize participation. We never want to turn students away.”
