Highlights: Miller has more than 20 years in hospital administration and academic teaching, including research and publications in the areas of health systems and financial management of clinical services. In one of her recent research projects, Miller investigated organizational and clinical outcomes of pain management for hospitalized children.

School of Architecture and Urban Design

Highlights: Gaunt was a practicing architect for 32 years before coming to KU as dean of the School of Architecture. He is a former chief executive officer of Ellerbe Becket Inc., Minneapolis, Minn. Gaunt is leading the School of Architecture into a multiyear facilities improvement project that includes raising money for a new building that would be built next to the school’s home, Marvin Hall.

Highlights: Fuerst came to KU from Texas A&M, where he had been since 1979. Fuerst heads a business school that is involved with programs to help regional businesses tackle problems. The school also has a strong international presence and has become a resource for international business education services.

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

Highlights: Before becoming dean, Wilcox was president and chief executive officer of the Kansas Board of Regents. He is a former chair of KU’s speech-language-hearing department. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is the largest of KU’s 14 schools with an annual budget of nearly $60 million in state-allocated funds and more than $27 million in grants and contract monies.

Highlights: Smith, a Kansas City, Kan., native, also is vice provost for university outreach. She came to KU from Marywood University in Scranton, Pa. She also had worked for 17 years at the University of Kentucky. KU’s Continuing Education program includes services at KU Medical Center, Law Enforcement Training Center in Hutchinson and fire service training in Lawrence.

Highlights: Lumpkin was dean of education at State University in West Georgia from 1996 to 2000. She has a master’s degree in sports administration and a doctorate in sports history from Ohio State University and a master’s of business administration from the University of North Carolina. The School of Education has about 80 faculty members, 30 professional staff members and 2,700 students.

School of Engineering

Highlights: Bell came to KU from the University of Alabama, where he was professor of mechanical engineering and director of the Center for Advanced Vehicle Technologies. He has three degrees from Texas A&M — a bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering, and master’s and doctoral degrees in mechanical engineering.

School of Fine Arts

Highlights: Hedden, a native of Colby, previously served as dean of the College of Fine Arts at Wichita State University for one year. Before that, he had been at the University of Arizona since 1987, serving as College of Fine Arts vice dean since 2000. Hedden earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from KU.

Highlights: Carlin joined the KU faculty in 1987. A Kemper award winner for teaching excellence, she has specialized in the study of political communications. She has served on the advisory board to the commission that sets up the presidential debates every four years.

School of Journalism and Mass Communications

Highlights: Brill is serving a one-year term as interim dean of journalism and mass communications. She replaces James Gentry, who is returning to full-time teaching and research at KU. Brill has taught at KU since 2000 and taught eight years at the University of Missouri-Columbia. She also worked for newspapers in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Montana.

School of Law

Highlights: Before coming to KU’s law faculty in 1993, McAllister was a clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Justices Byron White and Clarence Thomas and Judge Richard Posner of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. He also was in private practice in Washington, D.C. McAllister also has earned several awards, including the W.T. Kemper Fellowship for Teaching excellence in 1999. Since October, McAllister has been interim director of the Dole Institute of Politics.

School of Pharmacy

Highlights: Ken Audus started his career at KU in 1984 as a postdoctoral fellow and was hired on the faculty two years later. Before being named dean, the South Dakota native was chairman of the department of pharmaceutical chemistry for six years. His research focuses on the way drugs pass through the placenta and blood-brain barrier.

School of Social Welfare

Highlights: Weick joined KU’s social work faculty in 1976 and has spent almost her entire academic career at KU. Her areas of interest include social policy, social work theory and women’s issues. From 1981 to 1988, she served as chair of the doctoral programs.

Highlights: Atkinson replaced Deborah Powell, who left the School of Medicine in summer 2002. Atkinson had been professor and chair of the department of pathology and laboratory medicine at Kansas University Medical Center. Atkinson has edited several books on cytopatholgy, the diagnosis of disease based on cellular analysis. She came to KU in January 2000 from the MCP Hahnemann School of Medicine in Philadelphia.

Clark was dean of the School of Management at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Mo., prior to his appointment as dean of KU’s Overland Park campus. Clark oversaw an $8 million fund-raising campaign for the Rockhurst management school.

Before coming to KU, Johnson was assistant to the vice chancellor for student affairs at the universities of Missouri and Vermont. Johnson was brought in to improve student retention, facilitate student development and enhance diversity. The dean of students is responsible for campus social, cultural and educational life. He also has the title associate vice provost for student successs.

Bentley oversees KU’s extensive library system, which serves nearly 26,000 students and includes 3.3 million books and 27,000 current serial titles housed in seven library facilities on the Lawrence and Overland Park campuses. Bentley previously was dean of libraries at Auburn University.
