Senate rejects two more school funding proposals

? The Kansas Senate today rejected two more school finance plans as the Legislature got close to adjourning for several weeks.

The first proposal would have provided $35 million in increased funding to the $2.6 billion school finance system.

As originally proposed it would have partially paid for that school increase by delaying a proposed three-percent pay raise for state employees from July until Nov. 7.

But state Sen. Dave Jackson, R-Topeka, who with several other Republican senators put the measure together, said he wasn’t going to push that part of the plan.

Despite the pullback, the measure was defeated 21-16.

State Sen. Jim Barnett, R-Emporia, then proposed a smaller package, but that too was defeated, 25-15.

Defeat of the proposals means that work on school finance will continue during the wrap-up decision April 28. House members adjourned at 4:45 p.m. for the break.
