Baby found in shoe box

A mail carrier on Wednesday found a newborn girl who had been abandoned in a shoe box near Research Medical Center, Kansas City police said.

The infant, who appears to be one to three days old, was taken to a hospital. Police said the girl appears to be healthy.

A Postal Service worker found the baby about 9:30 a.m. in a box on a grassy area between the sidewalk and the street, police said. They did not know how long the baby had been outside.

Day-care operator released on bond

A federal judge has granted bond to a Kansas City woman accused of selling crack from her day-care center.

Chief Magistrate Judge John T. Maughmer released Valeriece Ealom, 34, on $25,000 bond. Ealom was one of three people arrested last week and charged with selling crack cocaine. Co-defendants Megashia Jackson, 27, and Clifford Dorsey, 43, both of Kansas City, also appeared at the hearing Tuesday. All have pleaded not guilty.

The judge freed Jackson on $15,000 bond, but ordered Dorsey, who already was on probation, to remain in federal custody.

Assistant U.S. Atty. W. Brent Powell said police found two loaded guns and crack cocaine within reach of the seven or eight children at the day care when Ealom was arrested.

Ealom agreed to help investigators arrest her supplier, according to court records.
