Dole Institute planning 9-11 memorial activities

The Dole Institute at Kansas University is hosting several events Thursday in memory of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, including a tour of a 9-11 memorial, a public signing of a book of remembrance, a flag-raising and a naturalization ceremony.

The “Day of Remembrance” begins with a ceremonial flag-raising by Lawrence Boy Scout troops at 8 a.m. Thursday outside the institute, which is on KU’s west campus.

The public is invited to view the institute’s 9-11 memorial between 8 a.m. and noon Thursday. The memorial features two 10-foot-long steel columns from the destroyed World Trade Center, which are now encased under a 29-foot stained glass American flag.

The public is also invited to sign a book of remembrance that former U.S. Sen. Bob Dole will send to New York City Mayor Bloomberg and the people of New York.

The day’s events will culminate at 2 p.m. when about 150 people from 59 nations will take an oath to become American citizens in a ceremony inside the institute.

The naturalization event, the first of its kind to be held on the KU campus, is open only to invited guests and media because of limited seating.
