Warm weather to end by Friday evening

Enjoy it while it lasts.

The unseasonably warm weather will continue for the next two days. But a storm system that arrives late Friday will bring cooler temperatures — and a chance for rain, says Ross Janssen, 6News meteorologist.

“It’s going to be pretty quiet here for the next two days, then our unseasonably warm temperatures will finally come to an end. We’ve had this big ridge over the western part of the country and it will finally break down,” Janssen said.

Wednesday’s skies will be mostly sunny, with the high reaching 80. The temperature will drop overnight and reach a low of 47 by Thursday morning.

Thursday will bring a slight cool-down, with the high reaching 78 under mostly sunny skies.

Friday’s morning low will be 50, reaching a high of 79 by the afternoon.

But scattered showers may threaten outdoor activities Friday evening, including the Lawrence High vs. Free State High football game at 7 p.m. at Kansas University’s Memorial Stadium.

“Friday, we’re going to see this approaching cold front from the northwest,” Janssen said. “. . . It should give us a 30 percent chance of storms Friday afternoon.”

Janssen says there is a chance for some scattered thunderstorms at game time.

“I think by that time, it’s possible that most of the thunderstorms will be east of here. But it will be turning noticeably cooler by kickoff,” he said.

Saturday’s morning low temperature will be 43.

Janssen said the weather looks good for KU football fans heading out Saturday to go watch the 1 p.m. away game against Kansas State University.

“If you’re going to Manhattan, it still looks dry,” he said. “Temperatures will be in the lower 50s and mostly cloudy. Jackets and sweatshirts will be a necessity.”

Sunday and Monday’s morning lows could reach the lower 30s.

“We could get some frost. If the skies clear out that would be our best ingredient for the first frost of the season,” he said.
