LHS sweet at senior send-off

Hayes, Hunter help Lawrence sweep home quad

It was the perfect ending for the two seniors on Lawrence High’s volleyball team — three wins, zero losses in the team’s final home quadrangular.

The Lions defeated Topeka West, 2-1 (25-21, 20-25, 15-11), Emporia, 2-0 (26-24, 25-23), and Leavenworth Immaculata, 2-0 (25-13, 25-21), Tuesday at Lawrence High, sending off seniors Nicole Hunter and Sarah Hayes the right way.

“That was awesome,” Hayes said. “We always have these talks about winning it for the seniors. Tonight, I really think they did.”

It was Lawrence’s first 3-0 record at a quad this year, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. The Lions grabbed critical momentum heading into Class 6A sub-state action, which takes place Saturday at Olathe East.

“We’ve had a real tough schedule this year,” LHS coach Jo Huntsinger said. “And it’s made us a stronger team. The whole point of high school athletics is to be the best you can be at the end of the season. Tonight was definitely a step in that direction.”

And for Hayes and Hunter, who were honored before the third match, it was a nice final step. The two were key cogs in the Lions’ successful night, making the most of an abundance of playing time.

They were helped immensely by the Lions’ talented junior class, as LHS (15-21) was led by strong nights from both Bobi Riley and Bonnie Toplikar. Riley had perhaps her best all-around night of the season, combining defensive presence with a ferocious attacking game.

“She’s hit the ball that well before,” Huntsinger said. “But I was more impressed with other areas of the game. I liked her serving and I liked her defense. She was awesome tonight.”

Before the night was over, Hayes and Hunter passed the torch, so to speak. Several sophomores saw playing time Tuesday, including Kirsten Stack, Lindsay Lawrence and Sydney Wilson, who was just a day removed from taking second at the Class 6-5A girls state golf meet.

Lawrence High junior Elise McDonald blocks a kill from Topeka West's Adina Schmidt. The Lions swept a home quadrangular Tuesday night at LHS.

Now, LHS turns its attention to sub-state. Two teams from the eight-team sub-state will advance to the state tournament in Topeka that starts Oct. 31.

Lawrence High's Erin Miller (5) and Bobi Riley nearly collide trying to save a serve against Topeka West. The Lions beat Topeka West, 2-1, Tuesday night in a quadrangular at Lawrence High.
