Lions place fifth in ‘relaxing’ team scramble

Lawrence High golf coach Mike Lewis called Thursday’s golf tournament a scramble; his Lions said it felt more like a siesta.

“It was just really relaxing,” LHS sophomore Jamie Shmalberg said of the nine-hole, best-ball tournament.

“This kind of tournament allows everyone to kind of bond with their teammates and rest a little bit before regionals.”

A laid-back Lewis admitted that was the game plan for the eight-team invite that featured each school playing a foursome consisting of two varsity players and two junior varsity players.

Shawnee Mission East won with a 34, while Olathe Northwest (36) and Overland Park Aquinas (37) came in second and third. Lawrence — led by a foursome which included Brittany Laughlin, Lauren Miller, Shmalberg and Val Wiesner — finished fifth with a score of 42.

While the Lions had fun with the lazy afternoon, Lewis said his squad was at least hitting the links in preparation for next week’s regionals.

“It’s kind of a friendly little competition between all the schools,” he said. “But there is some benefit to having this tournament now.

“It’s a good season-ender for us, but it also allows the girls to play a round and knock off the rust before next Tuesday’s regionals.”

Lewis said Shmalberg was the only one of the four who would be playing in the LHS-hosted regional at Eagle Bend, but that didn’t seem to stop any of the girls from having fun.

“The play is really slow, so you have some time to kind of joke around with your teammates,” said Miller, who added she knocked in a shot on hole No. 5 “that kind of hooked in mid-air and then went in.”

“The weather was wonderful, and it was just a real fun day to end the regular season on,” she said.
