Players of the week

City

Brett Urban

Lawrence

Height: 5-8. Weight: 165.

Class: Senior

The game: Before either team took a snap, Urban already had provided a huge spark for Lawrence High. The senior took the opening kickoff of Friday’s state playoff game against Olathe North, broke a couple of tackles and streaked 99 yards downfield for the touchdown. Olathe North won, 41-21, but Urban’s return was without a doubt a big boost for the Lions, who finished the season 7-3.

Comment: “It set the tone for the first half,” LHS coach Dirk Wedd said. “We needed something positive to happen, and he stepped up like he has all year.”

Honorable mention: Jamie Resseguie, junior, Free State.

Area

Micah Mason

Baldwin

Height: 6-0. Weight: 211.

The games: In a span of five days last week, Mason rushed for 510 yards and six touchdowns for the 9-2 Bulldogs. Tuesday, facing Eudora in the Class 4A state playoffs, Mason rushed for 265 yards on 30 carries, scoring three touchdowns in a 43-18 Baldwin victory. Then, Saturday against Kansas City Piper, Mason had 245 yards on 24 carries, with touchdown runs of 2, 56 and 45 yards. Baldwin won that game, 41-20, and will play Fort Scott in the state quarterfinals Friday.

Comment: “He’s a special back,” Eudora coach Gregg Webb said. “We have tough kids, but we couldn’t tackle him.”
