Bat bites KU student

A Lawrence police report looked like it might have come out of a script for a horror film — it said a bat bit a Kansas University fraternity member on the finger early Tuesday morning at the Kappa Sigma house.

The bat was loose in the house, 1045 Emery Rd., about 12:10 a.m. Tuesday when Patrick M. Renk, 20, trapped it and put it in a plastic bag, according to the report.

Before Renk could close the bag, the bat stuck its head out and bit him on the left pinky, according to the report.

Another fraternity member then clapped the bag with his hands to subdue it, injuring but not killing the bat, the report stated.

Renk received treatment for the bite at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, and fraternity brothers turned the bat over to city animal-control officers for observation, according to the report.
